This is my first year participating in the A to Z Challenge. The list of participants can be found here. Thanks to Arlee Bird and the co-hosts for hosting this awesome challenge. Check out the site here.
I’m also participating in a mini-hop that got started on theme reveal day when a few of us realized we had similar themes. It’s called Supernatural A to Z. Click below to check out the list of participants. 🙂
Hellhounds are the topic of the day. What to say about something that looks like a dog but is known for the black fur, and red glowing eyes sometimes possibly yellow. They are known to have super strength or speed. Also, known to have a foul odor and maybe even talk in some lore. In the show Supernatural they are controlled by high ranking demons such as a crossroads demon. In some lore, it is believed that if you see them or hear them howl it means impending death. Which goes with the being pets for a crossroads demon. They are the ones who make deals with humans and the hellhound helps collect the person’s soul when the deal is up. They have been in movies like Hellboy, The Omen, and Lost Boys. In television, they have been in Supernatural, Buffy the vampire slayer, and League of Super Evil. In popular fiction, they can be found in Laurell K. Hamilton’s Merry Gentry series, The Hound of Baskervilles, The Wheel of Time, and Good Omens.

Very creepy and very dangerous. Black Shuck is a legend in East Anglia, and recalling it from memory, I think he’s one of those hounds that if you see, or hear him, that’s impending doom. 🙂

Yes, they are. Interesting. Will have to look it up.
I did hellhounds today too – they’re fun aren’t they. Big black dogs who bring death and mayhem :).

That they are. 🙂
I love Supernatural…hellhounds not so much, though I believe my dog may be a close relative of them…
I sometimes wonder about mine. 🙂
I actually like Hellhounds..I’m weird, what can I say?! There have been similar creatures in many fantasy works, one in particular that sticks in my mind is Wizards First Rule. 🙂

Hellhounds are cool. I’ll have to check it out.:)
I’ve always liked the idea of hellhounds…there’s just something about an evil monster/spirit dog that comes to claim your soul. I’m weird that way. XD
They are kinda cool. I wouldn’t want to meet one though. 🙂
in christopher moore’s book dirty job (funny and pervy book) there are hellhounds as well. but they just show up one day and keep the mc’s daughter company.
i love crowley (from supernatural). he has a pet hound.
Might have to check that book out. If I’m not mistaken the hound’s name is Growley. 🙂
There’s a variation in a Lovecraft story and author Roland Yeomans has a short story about one that’s really good.
Will have to check them out.
My partner and I have been working through Supernatural and we just got done watching the episode with Hellhounds earlier this week. They are super creepy! Though the whole concept of bargaining with the devil is a very interesting concept, I must admit.

Yes, they are. What season of Supernatural are you watching because there are several episodes in different seasons that involve them and I don’t want to give anything away by talking about an episode if you haven’t seen it yet. 🙂
We just started the show, so we saw the ones that are halfway through Season 2.
You must be referring to the episode titled Crossroad Blues. It was a pretty good one. The hellhounds will make more appearances in other seasons. 🙂
If my memory serves me correctly, there were hellhounds in Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book too. Scary stuff. A xx
Very nice! I did Hellhounds last year. No end of good stories about them.

Man, I loved Good Omens. The Hellhound named Dog. Nothing better.
