#AtoZChallenge: Fairies

F

This is my first year participating in the A to Z Challenge. The list of participants can be found here. Thanks to Arlee Bird and the co-hosts for hosting this awesome challenge. Check out the site here.

I’m also participating in a mini-hop that got started on theme reveal day when a few of us realized we had similar themes.  It’s called Supernatural A to Z. Click below to check out the list of participants.  🙂

Fairies are the topic of the day. The Fae are creatures linked to European folklore. They can resemble various creatures from other mythologies. Some traditions use the term wee folk to describe the Fae. They are described as looking like humans and having magical powers. It is said that cold iron can be used to defeat the Fae. It is like poison to them. One thing that is common in the lore that stems from Celtic nations is that the Fae were driven into hiding by humans.

Some of my favorite books or shows are The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris, True Blood, and Supernatural. They have each featured the Fae at some point or another.

Today’s wonderful creature is Elves. The elf is from Germanic mythology and folklore. The The early elves lore is dependent on Norse mythology. They were known to have magical skills. There are believed to be two types of elves. One type is light and the other is dark. The dark elves were referred to as Dwarves by historian and mythographer Snorri Sturluson  Sturluson referred to the other elves as light elves. It is believed that Freyr, the god of fertility was tied to the elves by being given lordship of them. Want to find out more elves you can click here. For info on elves of middle of earth you can click here or here.

My favorite elf is Legolas from Lord of the Rings.

Dragons are the creature of the day. They are depicted as animals with reptilian or serpentine traits. The dragon is featured in many cultures. The main ones are the European dragons (European Folklore, Greek and Middle Eastern mythologies), and the Chinese dragon with counterparts in Japan (Japanese dragon), Korea and other East Asian countries. Dragons are one of the few supernatural creatures I like. I’ve always been fascinated by the mystery of them.

They are featured in movies such as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

#AtoZChallenge: Changelings

Today’s creature is Changelings. Folklore has them being the offspring of fairies, trolls, elves, or other legendary creatures. The legend is they are left in the place of human children.  In Scottish folklore, it’s believed that children were taken as replacements for fairy children.  In other lore, the belief was that human milk was a necessity for fairy children to survive.  There is so much lore out there about Changelings, it makes me wonder if they aren’t walking among us even now.

Day 2 is upon us and what will be the topic of the day I wonder. How about Banshees.  They are considered death omens.  They can be heard keening when someone is about to or has died. It’s the way they mourn the loss. The lore begins that they were Fairy women. They are believed to be Sidhe.  They can appear in many guises but mostly are seen as hags.  They have been featured on many different tv shows such as Charmed. I believe in one of the episode one of the sisters was changing into one.  In Marvel Comics Banshee is the code name for Sean Cassidy.

#AtoZChallenge: Angels

Now onto the topic of the day and that is Angels. What we know about them comes from many different religions. People are taught to believe that they are good and watch over us. Angels have a hierarchy system for lack of a better term. We have Archangels, Nephilim, and Seraphs to list just a few.

Nephilim are the offspring of humans and angels.  Archangels are angels with high rank. The four that are talked about are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Lucifer. Lucifer is considered to be a Archangel even though he is a fallen angel. Seraphs are a higher class of angel. They rank above normal angels in the hierarchy.

My favorite fictional angels are or were on my favorite tv show Supernatural. They are ranked below.  I like the actors who portray them.

1. Castiel

2. Balthazar

3. Gabriel

The three angels are my favorites because of the actors who portray or has portrayed them. If you’re a fan of the show then you know what I’m talking about. 1 is still part of the show. 2 and 3 were killed during seasons and 5 and 6. I must admit I kinda wanted to add Lucifer to the list as number 4 and as with the others it has to do with the actor who portrayed him.
